Have you heard the predictions? Both the Farmer’s Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac have predicted above-average snowfall this season for the Midwest. The Farmer’s Almanac also predicted a cold and snowy winter last year, and that ended up being what we got. Well, Minnesota was right on the line between “Cold & Snowy” and “Wild Temp Swings, Periods of Storminess”. Thinking back, that sounds about right. Here’s the graph for last season’s snowfall, courtesy of climatestations.com:
As you can see, a bulk of our above-average snow came in April. So what exactly is the prediction for this winter? The Farmer’s Almanac says, “Coldest temperatures will be over the Northern Plains on east into the Great Lakes. Precipitation-wise, the Southern Plains, Midwest, and Southeast will see above-normal conditions…” They again put Minnesota right on a line between “Piercing Cold with Normal Snowfall” and “Biting Cold & Snowy”. The Old Farmer’s Almanacdoesn’t predict extra cold temperatures, but they do predict “Above-normal precipitation and snowfall…the snowiest periods will occur in mid and late December, early January, and early February.”
Of course, a weather prediction this far out has to be taken with a grain of salt.
