Now that Spring is here, we recommend doing a parking lot assessment.
- Start by walking through your lot. Make sure that it’s clean and free of debris.
- Check out your parking lot at night and confirm that it is well lit. This is especially critical if your customers regularly park in the lot in the evening.
- Evaluate areas where curbs are starting to crumble or cracks are forming.
- Look at your parking lot striping and make sure that the stripes are still vibrant and easily detected.
Your parking lot is the first and last impression that your customers will have of your business. Clean, well-maintained parking surfaces demonstrate your attention to detail. Protecting and maintaining your parking lot is also the greenest, most environmentally friendly option available.
If you’re looking for snow removal, asphalt paving or excavation help for your commercial business, here are six reasons to consider Interstate Companies for the job.
We know Minnesota. We’re Minnesotans. Some of our competitors are large companies with headquarters in other states. Our first-hand knowledge of our state gives us a better understanding of how to best serve our customers. For more on our Minnesota roots, read our blog post: Real Minnesota Roots: Property Management, Minnesota Style.
Our Leadership has Practical Experience
Our company has modest roots. We started out with just two guys, a truck and a commitment to service in 1999. That drive has propelled us and helped build our business to what it is today. We understand what it takes to keep your parking lots and pavement surfaces clear and safe because our staff from the top down has done it.

We’re a Green Company

Read what T.J. from Prudential had to say about our services.
“Just a quick note to let you know that I am retiring…last day in the office is May 1. I also want to take this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed working with you and your team…office, snow removal, asphalt / concrete repair … everyone is very responsive and helpful. But, it all starts with you. I really appreciate how you worked with me and always responded to my concerns (which were few) quickly.”

One Vendor, Two Distinct Services
Since we provide snow removal services and pavement maintenance, you can use us for both services. This saves you time – no need to source another vendor. We also get to know you better, which results in better service for you.
It’s January that means we’re right in the middle of snow season. Do you know where your snow removal crew is at?
Well, we hope you do, because uncleared sidewalks at your commercial property spell trouble! Did you know that 90% of walkway injuries happen with less than 1 inch of snow? Just a thin layer of snow is all it takes to make the difference between a clear sidewalk and a slippery mess. If sidewalks aren’t cleared properly, liability falls on you as the property owner.
After clearing the snow, it’s extremely important to also apply a deicing agent. Even that tiny trace of snow that’s left over after shoveling or brushing snow can become slippery. This step is equally as important as removing the snow!
So, to protect yourself from slip-and-fall lawsuits, you should:
- Hire a reliable snow removal service. Yes, we’re tooting our own horn with this step, but hiring a substandard service won’t cut it in Minnesota. We’ve seen snow removal companies that leave the parking lot and walkways looking like a skating rink.
- Monitor the slip factor by checking walkways yourself. Keep a deicer on hand if the weather should change suddenly and ice forms in an instant.
- Put up signs. If you know that a certain section of your walkway or parking lot is prone to ice formation, put up a sign that warns patrons or employees of the possible slip factor.
Together, we can keep Minnesota safe for walking. For more about Minnesota snow sidewalk rules, download the snow shoveling flyer.
It’s officially Autumn in Minnesota. This means that seasons can change on a dime. One minute, we’re enjoying a beautiful Fall day and the next we’re getting pummeled by an early snow storm. Who can forget the infamous Halloween blizzard in 1991?
If you’re a facilities manager or tasked with the role of sourcing pavement maintenance and snow removal vendors, we invite you to take a look closer at Interstate and consider us for the job.
Our mission has always been to provide the highest level of quality and service. This was true when we started Interstate with one rented bobcat and a pickup truck in 1999 and it still rings true today. As our company has grown, we developed the motto, “no, we can’t do that.” This “can-do” approach keeps us striving to exceed our client’s needs and expectations.
Interstate’s management team experience “out in the field” gives them the insight to guide the company. Whether a team is working on a pavement striping project, pavement maintenance work or snow removal job, our leadership knows what it takes to do the job well and gives our employees what they need to be successful.
Commercial property management is all we do. Other companies handle both commercial and residential work. We believe that focusing only on commercial projects gives us valuable experience that allows us to serve our clients better. This experience in the commercial sector also allows us to anticipate our client’s needs and exceed expectations.
We know that pavement emergencies or snow storms rarely happen at a convenient time. That’s why we have a 24/7 emergency line. We hope you never have to use it, but if you need us at 2am on a Monday night, simply call us or complete an emergency request and we’ll be there to help.
If this doesn’t convince you to give us a try, read our testimonials page where we’ve compiled a just a few of our kudos from clients.
We’ve all been to the mall, where you park in the endless heat island of an asphalt lot and feel like you’re in an urban desert. How much better would that experience be if you parked by or walked past well-manicured green islands, large potted trees or bushes, or a row of flowers? Odds are, your experience would be more enjoyable. Even if you don’t think to yourself “hey, this nature instead of a vast expanse of asphalt is making me like it here more,” it’s happening subconsciously.
As a property owner, your goal is to make people feel welcome and want to come to you. A little green space might end up doing just that! But when you’re fighting for enough space for patrons to park, it’s pretty hard to just decide to get rid of a few valuable parking spots to plant something. So, how do you achieve the right balance?
Let’s start with your options. Green space can be placed around the edges of your lot, in a couple strategically placed islands, or in planters. It doesn’t have to take up a huge amount of space! Take a look at your lot with an eye for green space. Where could you designate a small space here and there for a little tree, a planter of flowers, or a row of hedges? You may have to lay out your lot in an entirely different way, or just change one small section. The best time to add green space is when you’re going through a repaving & striping of your whole lot.
Keep in mind that, if there’s just no space that you can give up in your lot, nice planters placed by your doors or somewhere on/near/flanking your paved walkway area. Some bright flowers could make all the difference!
Overall, any way you can make your outdoor space just as inviting as your indoor space will make your customers/clients/staff enjoy being there more!

Spring has sprung and commercial paving season is underway! We’re gearing up for a busy season here at Interstate Companies. This past winter wasn’t a particularly harsh one, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t wreak havoc on paved surfaces. A little bit of freezing and thawing plus salt and plowing can put potholes and cracks in previously smooth surfaces.
When spring rolls around, it’s a good idea to take a look at your paved surfaces every year. Evaluate areas where cracks are forming or curbs are crumbling, check your striping to make sure the paint is still vibrant enough, and just take a look at how clean and inviting it looks.
You’d be surprised how much impact a parking lot and paved spaces update can have on the look and feel of your building! Contact us today to set up a site evaluation.
When you’re looking around for a company to handle your commercial asphalt and pavement services, we know you have a lot to choose from. Let’s face it, you’ve probably already seen at least 5 other companies online. So, why should you pick Interstate over the others?
Good question! There are a couple of things that set us apart from our competitors that we’d like you to know about.
- Commercial property management is all we do. Other companies handle both commercial and residential work, whereas we’re focused in one area, and we’re experts at it.
- We handle property management year-round. So, come winter, you don’t have to find another company to handle your snow and ice management – just give us a call! Since we offer year-round service, we form relationships with our customers that go beyond one job.
- We do beautiful and professional yet quick and efficient work. We understand that projects you need us for, like parking lot repaving and striping, might make it more difficult for your employees or customers to reach you during the time we’re working. Working as quickly as possible while maintaining excellence in our work is a huge priority for us, and we believe that’s what you expect the most out of a pavement, excavation and snow removal company.
- On top of pavement maintenance and snow removal, we have an experienced excavation team to round out or year-round, full-service property management.
- We have a 24/7 emergency line. We hope you’ll never have to use it, but if something crazy happens at your property and you need help ASAP, just call that number and we’ll be on it!
When you’re a commercial property owner, you have a lot to worry about. Guessing whether or not you need a new asphalt parking lot or entryways doesn’t have to be one of them! Here are some easy ways to know if you’re due for new asphalt.
Cracks look like webs
If there are networks of cracks that have appeared in your asphalt that resemble a spider web or alligator back, it might be time for new asphalt. Especially if these cracks are large enough for weeds to grow through or the chunks of asphalt in the middle seem to crumble a little more every day, it’s probably time to tear it up and repave it.
When you have too much snow, just melt it away! Below is the video of our Snow Dragon in action.
Did you know the melting snow can actually cost quite a bit less than hauling it away? Find out what we mean in our snow melting infographic.
Interstate Companies isn’t the only commercial snow removal contractor in the Twin Cities. In fact, there are quite a few companies around that offer commercial snow removal services. So, if you’re on our website taking a look at us, why exactly should you choose Interstate over the other guys, especially if the other guys give you a cheaper estimate?
