Fall Parking Lot Inspection Tips

Do you know what football, anything spiced/pumpkin and the Minnesota State Fair have in common? They’re all signs of fall. While most Minnesotans enjoy the cool air, those crisp autumn days tend to go by too quickly and one day without notice, we find ourselves dealing once again with the sleet and snow of winter.

Asphalt Scams – A Summer Rite of Passage

Asphalt Scams in Minnesota

It’s finally here. The time we’ve been waiting for, Summer! Summer in Minnesota means BBQs, time at the lake, bike rides and yes, asphalt scams.

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota is warning Minnesotan’s to watch out for asphalt scams.

If somebody knocks on your door claiming that they’re doing a job nearby and they have leftover asphalt or concrete and will give you a pavement maintenance deal on your driveway or lot, don’t fall for it. These are typically scams, and they target both homes and businesses. They tend to overpromise and use high-pressure tactics for closing the sale.

With any company, we urge you to vet them thoroughly before approving to any discounted jobs. Odds are it’s a scam, and they’ll do very shoddy work and charge you more than they said they would.

Parking Lot Striping Projects – A Look at the Process

June 12th, 2017 by

We’ve all encountered parking lots where the spaces are not clearly marked. It can be tough to know if you’re really parked in an “official” space. It can be frustrating for people trying to park and it can make your parking lot look shabby.

The issue might be the result of old stripes or stripes that have faded over time. Either way, restriping a parking lot is an easy way to update the look of your parking lot. Restriping and paving updates will not only make your parking surfaces look better, these updates will help keep your parking lots safe. Clear parking lot striping is key, especially for heavy traffic parking lots.

So, what’s involved with a parking lot striping project? In short, we’ll make sure that your parking lot spaces all are the same length from row to row. This will make your lot look neat and create a better flow for cars. We’ll also make sure that old parking lot stencils are blacked out to ensure that the new stenciled lines clearly stand out.

Check out some of our photos from one of our paving and striping projects.

Spring is Here. Time for a Parking Lot Assessment

March 29th, 2017 by

Now that Spring is here, we recommend doing a parking lot assessment.

  1. Start by walking through your lot. Make sure that it’s clean and free of debris.
  2. Check out your parking lot at night and confirm that it is well lit. This is especially critical if your customers regularly park in the lot in the evening.
  3. Evaluate areas where curbs are starting to crumble or cracks are forming.
  4. Look at your parking lot striping and make sure that the stripes are still vibrant and easily detected.

Your parking lot is the first and last impression that your customers will have of your business. Clean, well-maintained parking surfaces demonstrate your attention to detail. Protecting and maintaining your parking lot is also the greenest, most environmentally friendly option available.

Removing Snow & Ice from Parking Lots – Tips from the Experts

January 24th, 2017 by

Removing Snow & Ice from Parking Lots

It’s January that means we’re right in the middle of snow season. Do you know where your snow removal crew is at?

Well, we hope you do, because uncleared sidewalks at your commercial property spell trouble! Did you know that 90% of walkway injuries happen with less than 1 inch of snow? Just a thin layer of snow is all it takes to make the difference between a clear sidewalk and a slippery mess. If sidewalks aren’t cleared properly, liability falls on you as the property owner.

After clearing the snow, it’s extremely important to also apply a deicing agent. Even that tiny trace of snow that’s left over after shoveling or brushing snow can become slippery. This step is equally as important as removing the snow!

So, to protect yourself from slip-and-fall lawsuits, you should:

  1. Hire a reliable snow removal service. Yes, we’re tooting our own horn with this step, but hiring a substandard service won’t cut it in Minnesota. We’ve seen snow removal companies that leave the parking lot and walkways looking like a skating rink.
  2. Monitor the slip factor by checking walkways yourself. Keep a deicer on hand if the weather should change suddenly and ice forms in an instant.
  3. Put up signs. If you know that a certain section of your walkway or parking lot is prone to ice formation, put up a sign that warns patrons or employees of the possible slip factor.

Together, we can keep Minnesota safe for walking. For more about Minnesota snow sidewalk rules, download the snow shoveling flyer.

Choosing an Asphalt / Snow Removal Company

Choosing a Pavement or Snow Removal Contractor in Minneapolis, MN

It’s officially Autumn in Minnesota. This means that seasons can change on a dime. One minute, we’re enjoying a beautiful Fall day and the next we’re getting pummeled by an early snow storm. Who can forget the infamous Halloween blizzard in 1991?

If you’re a facilities manager or tasked with the role of sourcing pavement maintenance and snow removal vendors, we invite you to take a look closer at Interstate and consider us for the job.

Our mission has always been to provide the highest level of quality and service. This was true when we started Interstate with one rented bobcat and a pickup truck in 1999 and it still rings true today. As our company has grown, we developed the motto, “no, we can’t do that.” This “can-do” approach keeps us striving to exceed our client’s needs and expectations.

Interstate’s management team experience “out in the field” gives them the insight to guide the company. Whether a team is working on a pavement striping project, pavement maintenance work or snow removal job, our leadership knows what it takes to do the job well and gives our employees what they need to be successful.

Commercial property management is all we do. Other companies handle both commercial and residential work. We believe that focusing only on commercial projects gives us valuable experience that allows us to serve our clients better. This experience in the commercial sector also allows us to anticipate our client’s needs and exceed expectations.

We know that pavement emergencies or snow storms rarely happen at a convenient time. That’s why we have a 24/7 emergency line. We hope you never have to use it, but if you need us at 2am on a Monday night, simply call us or complete an emergency request and we’ll be there to help.

If this doesn’t convince you to give us a try, read our testimonials page where we’ve compiled a just a few of our kudos from clients.

How to Integrate Green Space into Your Parking Lot

April 28th, 2016 by

How to Integrate Green Space Into Your Parking Lot

We’ve all been to the mall, where you park in the endless heat island of an asphalt lot and feel like you’re in an urban desert. How much better would that experience be if you parked by or walked past well-manicured green islands, large potted trees or bushes, or a row of flowers? Odds are, your experience would be more enjoyable. Even if you don’t think to yourself “hey, this nature instead of a vast expanse of asphalt is making me like it here more,” it’s happening subconsciously.

As a property owner, your goal is to make people feel welcome and want to come to you. A little green space might end up doing just that! But when you’re fighting for enough space for patrons to park, it’s pretty hard to just decide to get rid of a few valuable parking spots to plant something. So, how do you achieve the right balance?

Let’s start with your options. Green space can be placed around the edges of your lot, in a couple strategically placed islands, or in planters. It doesn’t have to take up a huge amount of space! Take a look at your lot with an eye for green space. Where could you designate a small space here and there for a little tree, a planter of flowers, or a row of hedges? You may have to lay out your lot in an entirely different way, or just change one small section. The best time to add green space is when you’re going through a repaving & striping of your whole lot.

Keep in mind that, if there’s just no space that you can give up in your lot, nice planters placed by your doors or somewhere on/near/flanking your paved walkway area. Some bright flowers could make all the difference!

Overall, any way you can make your outdoor space just as inviting as your indoor space will make your customers/clients/staff enjoy being there more!
